Emily Goethel is our Thursday night Jazz master and she also subs our Burlesque, Lyrical and Heels classes!
What moves you? I truly love performing and perfecting my technique; I enjoy pushing myself to jump higher, turn more and stretch further every day.
A brief story of your life:
I began dancing at the age of 10 at Foothills Dance Studio in Shingle Springs, CA. After just one year of training, I performed with the competition team in ballet, jazz, tap and lyrical. I was also a founding member of the Prima Arts Student Ballet Company where we performed for local schools and community events. At the age of 15 I moved to Hawkins Dance & Performing Arts Studio in Folsom, CA to further my training under Deirdre Hawkins & Jamie Hancock. There, I joined the Folsom Lake Civic Ballet Company and iMPACT Contemporary Dance Company as a principal dancer under the umbrella of Stages Northern California Performing Arts. As a Stages dancer, I performed in many community events, fundraisers, showcases and was a finalist for the Sacramento Area Dance Alliance Scholarship. I also spent my free time competing across the Northern California region winning various musicality and overall high score awards including multiple 1st overall high score awards in student choreography divisions. Upon moving to San Diego to attend Point Loma Nazarene University, I have danced and performed with Butterworth Dance Company, Mesa College Dance Company, Bite Dance Company, Ooh La La Dance Company, The PGK Dance Project and Velours Rouge Entertainment. In 2016 I danced on an international tour to the Maldives and Thailand and was part of a performance featured in a commercial for Allina Healthcare. My most recent choreography for teen competitors has won multiple high score, choreography and judges choice awards.
I have a degree in Broadcast Journalism from Point Loma Nazarene University and spend my days working as the VP of Operations at 6˚ Business Networking. I live with my husband Matthew and cat Gus.
AND WORK HARD"
- Emily Goethel
How did you encounter the movement lab? A friend mentioned it to me a while back, so I dropped in to take a jazz class, and now they can't get rid of me ;)
What is your favorite class to take at the lab? BUTI! I have 0 interest in Yoga, I don't have the patience, I just want to dance. The lab staff convinced me to give it a try and now I'm HOOKED! It's a ton of fun and it's the perfect mix of cardio, stretch, conditioning, and dance.
What is your favorite class to teach? Jazz of course! I also really enjoy teaching Lyrical, which we do in Jazz class every once in a while.
Favorite move(s) to teach and/or practice and why? I really love technique and tricks, you'll find my teaching style tends to focus on turns, leaps and kicks.
Music (album, song, or artist) you swear by: I like it all! I find anything with a solid beat and/or great lyrics just makes me want to dance! Except heavy metal, my husband likes that stuff and I can't really wrap my head around it.
What are the highlights of your fitness career? I've bounced around a lot in the SD dance scene, I'm most proud of the fact that I'm constantly jumping in to a class without knowing what to expect or who will be there. My solo adventures have lead me down some really cool paths including commercials, paid gigs, an international performance tour, professional photo shoots and teaching jobs!
A tough lesson you've learned: Work hard and be humble, stay out of the drama and enjoy what you're passionate about. It's not worth the time and effort to claw your way to the top if your director/teacher/leader isn't going to notice you without the ugliness. Surround yourself with good people, and they'll recognize your true & pure talent.
If you could change the world, where would you start? If you don't know me already, you should know, I'm very bad at making decisions, especially when there are too many options. So I guess I'd start with some coaching on where to start... One option might be lowering the height requirement for the Rockette auditions... or homeless pets... or cancer...
How can we stay in touch with you? On Facebook! Let's be friends!
